Persona:

Kyle Leonard (25 years old / Male)

  • Goals

    • End: want to have a balanced diet on campus

    • Experience: He eats on campus about 3 days a week before or after class. He tends to choose salad or sandwich and seldom have a burger or pizza. He would like to cook himself if he has time, but never bring food to the class.

    • Life: wants to gain a high reputation in the field of data and lead a well-managed life.

  • Bio

    • Kyle is a graduate student at Heinz school. He does not have a lot of classes every day but still has a heavy workload in his capstone project and job searching process. He has a daily routine of working out in recent years, so he visits the gym on campus 3 times a week. He is no longer following a strict diet for better performance but still tries to eat as healthy as possible.

    • The nutrition information is the main consideration of his buying decision. Not being able to balance all the nutrients, he prefers a meal served with meat and vegetables and high-quality ingredients as well. He is happy that he could have a customized sandwich or salad on campus, but it is still far from his expectation. Getting access to various foods with clear nutrition information is important to Kyle.

Scenario:

  • Kyle has just finished his class at 12:20 PM, and is heading to the Cohon Center for a quick meal. He is so glad that he is having a break during the next class and the group meeting at night so that he could go to the gym at 4:30. Waiting in the line at the cafeteria, he is trying to figure out what to have today - he read through the menu on the board, and decided to have a turkey sandwich which he assumes would be the best choice before gym. However, it turns out that there is much more cheese and less vegetables than he thought, which means he exceeds his fat and sugar intake again.

Question: How might we help students decide on a more balanced meal?

  • Goal of Persona: Kyle always wants to have a balanced diet on campus so that he could maintain a healthy lifestyle in his busy life.

  • Context: He plans to go to the gym after class, so he wants to have a mild meal with rich protein. He only has half an hour before class starts, so the cafeteria is his best choice.

  • Challenge: Looking at the boards, he isn't quite sure which meal provides rich protein while having less fat.

  • Solution: Instead of just estimating the nutrients content, he checked his “Scotty Eats” on his phone, and got to know the detailed info of the ingredients and nutrients. He makes his decision based on the app, then has a well balanced meal.
